Welcome
Salzburg is one of Austria's cultural gems, being that it is the noted location of 'The Sound of Music', the birthplace of Mozart, the host of the Salzburg Festival, and the setting for a huge variety of stunning baroque architectural icons. Busy all throughout the year but especially so in the tourist peak season, Salzburg's main sights include the Salzburg Cathedral, the Hohensalzburg fortress, the Untersberg mountain, and even the Berghof (Hitler's mountain retreat). Salzburg is also a great place to try Austrian cuisine and to visit the slopes - though Salzburg has no ski-slope of it's own, it is in close proximity to a number of suitable resorts.

Salzburg is serviced by Salzburg International Airport (W.A. Mozart Airport), one of the largest in Austria and regarded as being the gateway to the Austrian ski-slopes. Many international airlines visit the two-terminal airport, including British Airways (London-Gatwick), Thomson Fly (Manchester), Ryan Air (London-Stansted and Dublin), First Choice (Birmingham and Manchester) and BMI (Glasgow). Terminal One is still the most used, with both arrivals and departures taking place on the ground floor. Car rentals are offered at the airport on the ground floor of the airport's multi-storey car park; companies present at that location include Hertz, Sixt, Budget, Avis, Europcar and National/Alamo. The airport itself is located on the south-western outskirts of the city, but Salzburg centre can easily be reached by taking the Innsbrucker Bundesstrasse. The A1 West-Autobahn is also close by should you want to get out of the city.
